Yes, we were flirting. A while later, she asked me the question - what did I study? I said engineering, without any particular meaning attached to it. And then like a cold metal rail, she went stiff. My jokes weren’t funny any more. Her eyes wandered to everyone else. What was it? Why? Why? Why?
I wonder why people consider engineers to have lack of ‘emotions’. Even the girls think that we don’t have that ‘touchy feeling’ in us.
Is it true?
Actually, four or more years of math, logic, science, and engineering can turn anyone into an automaton.
I am no exception of the above statement. I have a lot of contempt for the soft side of life .Emotions and feelings are not real, just some figment of someone's overactive hormones acting up. They are useless. They leave people susceptible to arguments that prey on man's irrationality.
The whole concept of human emotions and feelings is an overrated thing. Actually emotions are illusions like that of the tooth fairy, or santa claus. They are things we fabricate in our mind.
Like the illusion of falling in love, it’s great for young people. It’s better for older people who don't want to let it go and appreciate the magic that they feel, the eternal journey and adventure that comes from seeking it out, pretending to have it, and the tragedy and loss of waking up to find it gone. However it was never there. Love, perhaps the most selfish action any human being can express to others or themselves. It is similar to ordering the best available food in a restaurant from the menu only this time you choose a person. You change the restaurant and your preference change and similarly surroundings and conditions change your love.
All feelings which surge in our mind are just our own contemplations and the reactions which we choose subconsciously consciously. Feelings/Emotions are cultural invention not a natural phenomenon. We have been so deeply indoctrinated into the emotional mythology that we have no awareness of the process of programming that creates our responses. Popular culture provides the main way we learn to ‘emote’. Movies, literature etc. So in reality all emotions are well crafted responses a person have thought of in certain situations. We are just acting them.
So, some of us choose to be real and some of us always acting/faking. And Engineers, my friends have chosen to be real and not very good actors.
Hence Proved.
